Introduction

We make decisions almost at every single moment. While reading this abstract, you could be deciding whether you would spend the time to join my talk, to go for a coffee or to stay in your office. Considerable evidence has suggested that the prefrontal cortex is important for comparing between options and sampling information about the options during decision making. However, the precise functional roles of the prefrontal cortex are largely unclear. In this talk, I will present my works that investigate how sub-regions of the prefrontal cortex contributes to different aspects of decision making. I will provide evidence from brain imaging experiments with healthy human and monkey subjects about the relationship between prefrontal cortex and decision making. I will also talk about evidence from our recent study with focal brain lesion patients to establish the causal role of prefrontal cortex.
